[Busan Travel] Escaping the Daily Grind! An Authentic Day Trip Review of Yeongdo’s Hidden Gem, ‘Dongsam-dong’

OMG, guys! I finally got to catch some proper fresh air! Between managing my underwear shop, keeping track of inventory, and staring a hole through my dual monitors to churn out web design projects, I seriously felt like even 48 hours a day wouldn’t be enough. I decided I couldn’t take it anymore, so I swapped my mouse for a camera and impulsively hopped on a KTX train!

The destination? The dynamic port city of South Korea, Busan, where the wide-open ocean blows your stress away in exactly one second! But instead of the super-crowded tourist traps like Haeundae or Gwangalli, I headed to a hidden hot place that holds Busan’s true maritime history and insane natural scenery: Dongsam-dong in Yeongdo-gu. I honestly wanted to keep this place a secret, but I’m spilling the tea exclusively for everyone visiting my blog!

1. Dongsam-dong, A Charming Neighborhood Holding Thousands of Years of History

Honestly, when you think of Yeongdo, you probably just think of cafes with pretty ocean views, right? But in Dongsam-dong, every step you take has an amazing story.

The very first place I stopped by was the Dongsam-dong Shell Mound exhibition hall. Can you believe these are the traces of people who lived during the Neolithic period, a whopping 8,000 to 3,500 years ago? The remnants of ancient people digging up clams and hunting while looking out at the ocean remain perfectly intact. As someone who spends every day chasing the latest trends in web design, seeing these thousands-of-years-old analog (?) traces felt incredibly surreal and so refreshing. I highly recommend this spot for history buffs or any curious travelers!

2. Mind-Blowing Scale, The National Maritime Museum

Next up, I moved to the heart of the marine industry where the Korea National Maritime University is located! Among the buildings there, I visited the National Maritime Museum, which boasts absolutely overwhelming visuals.

Wow, who designed this architecture? The exterior looks like a giant ship cutting through the waves. My occupational disease flared up, and I thought, “I need to save this to my design reference folder right now!” and probably snapped a hundred photos. Once you step inside, there is a mountain of things to see, from ancient shipbuilding techniques to deep-sea exploration technology. There are also marine ecosystem exhibits that rival any major aquarium, making it super popular with families. Above all, it’s incredibly spacious and cool, making it the perfect summer travel course in Busan.

3. Every Shot is a Masterpiece! Taejongdae and the Four Seasons of Dongsam-dong

The true highlight of Dongsam-dong has to be its breathtaking natural landscape. The sheer coastal cliffs and the wide-open ocean view honestly felt like staring at a high-res monitor wallpaper in real life. Dongsam-dong is essentially the gateway to the famous Taejongdae Park. The scent of pine mixed with the salty sea breeze blows in, creating a pure healing experience that no artificial air freshener could ever replicate!

Dongsam-dong is overflowing with charm all year round, but let me drop some seasonal tips before you go:

  • Spring (April – May): Wildflowers are in full bloom around Taejongdae Park, making the color combinations absolutely insane! It’s the perfect warm weather for a stroll.

  • Summer (June – August): It gets hot, but the cool ocean breeze makes it bearable. The deep blue sea is gorgeous, making it highly recommended for boat tours around Yeongdo Island.

  • Autumn (September – November): Personally, my highest recommendation! I once saw a photo of Taejongdae taken in November 2021, and the contrast between the red autumn foliage and the azure sea was literally a magazine editorial. When the clear autumn sky reflects off the unique rock formations, it is tear-jerkingly beautiful.

  • Winter (December – March): With fewer crowds, you can feel like you’ve rented the whole place out. The rough coastline against the cold, clear sky has a very raw and wild charm.

Top 4 Spots for the Perfect Photo in Dongsam-dong & Yeongdo
  1. Taejongdae Observatory & Yeongdo Lighthouse: Use a wide-angle lens to capture yourself against the horizon and the iconic lighthouse!

  2. National Maritime Museum Exterior: Snap a pic with the sea in the background alongside the museum’s spaceship-like (or ship-like) exterior!

  3. Coastal Walking Trails: Find hidden coves and unique rock formations along the path to Taejongdae for moody, aesthetic shots.

  4. Busan Harbor Bridge Night View: When entering Yeongdo at night, the illuminated Busan Harbor Bridge is the absolute peak of romance.

4. The Editor (and Boss’s) Practical Tips for Dongsam-dong ✨

Here are some real-life tips I gained from experiencing it firsthand. Get your notepads ready!

  • Comfortable shoes are a MUST! If you want to walk around Taejongdae and explore the museum, sneakers are essential. Promise me you’ll only take out those pretty heels when it’s time to snap a photo~!

  • Strict sun protection: Don’t let your guard down just because the sea breeze is cool. The UV rays on the coast are quite strong even on cloudy days, so please pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

  • Eat local seafood: You’re by the coast, so seafood is mandatory! Fresh sashimi (hoe) is a given, but you also have to try grilled clams or Busan’s famous fish cakes (eomuk). Seafood eaten on a trip tastes just as rewarding as a meal after a long, hard day of work.

  • Check operating hours: The National Maritime Museum and the Taejongdae Danubi Train have closing times, so make sure to check their official websites before planning your itinerary!

5. Perfect for Backpackers! How to Get There & Nearby Courses

“What if I don’t have a car?” No worries! Busan’s public transportation is fantastic.

  • From Busan Station: Hop on Bus 88 or 101, and it’ll take you straight to Taejongdae or the National Maritime Museum without needing to transfer. It takes about 40-50 minutes, and the time flies by as you look out at the Busan scenery.

  • From Nampo-dong/Jagalchi: There are tons of buses heading into Yeongdo from here, too. The view from the window as you cross the Yeongdo Bridge (connecting the mainland to the island) is pure art.

If you have the time, I recommend doing the Full Yeongdo Course: Crush the National Maritime Museum and Taejongdae (Danubi Train is a must!) in Dongsam-dong, then head west to walk the cliffside paths of Huinnyeoul Culture Village (aka the Santorini of Busan) and grab a coffee! Then, catch the Yeongdo Bridge lifting ceremony right at 2 PM, cross the bridge to Jagalchi Market or Nampo-dong, and wrap up your evening with some amazing street food. Perfect, right?

For me, exhausted by a repetitive daily routine, pixels on a screen, and sales ledgers, Dongsam-dong in Yeongdo was the perfect oasis. It’s rare to find a place where you can experience ancient history, sleek modern architecture, and awe-inspiring nature all at once!

If you are planning a domestic trip, especially to Busan, make sure to add Yeongdo’s Dongsam-dong to your itinerary instead of the usual cliché spots. You will experience the miracle of having your heavy chest completely cleared. Well, with all this fully recharged energy, I’m going to head back to reality to source some pretty new underwear arrivals and get back to my design projects! Have a wonderful trip, everyone!
