Unlock Uljin: Korea’s Undiscovered Coastal Gem You NEED to Visit!

🌊 Uljin: The Hidden Jewel of the East Coast! Conquering the “Authentic” Emotional Travel Spot (feat. Red Snow Crab & Geumgangsong Healing)

Hey everyone! When you think of “Traveling to Korea,” are you still only picturing Seoul’s Myeong-dong, Busan’s Haeundae, or Jeju Island? While those places are lovely, if you’re a traveler yearning to escape the crowds and find that “I-want-to-keep-this-to-myself” Instagrammable spot, you need to pay attention to today’s post!

Today, I’m here to wake up your travel cells with the hidden pearl of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s east coast: Uljin.  From coastal cliffs that look like they were carved by hand to emerald waters that sparkle like jewels and forests that have stood for thousands of years… honestly, everywhere your feet touch will have you exclaiming, “Is this really Korea?” With its timeless beauty—famously captured in that iconic November 2012 photo—let’s dive into a vivid exploration of Uljin together!

“The Vibes Here are Insane!” Uljin’s Highlight Spots

Uljin isn’t just “nice nature.” It’s packed with treasure-like locations where every shutter click turns into a masterpiece!

1. An Underground Palace: Seongnyu Cave

The first stop is Seongnyu Cave, a designated Natural Monument. The moment you step into the entrance, you’re enveloped by cool (or warm!) air, making it feel like you’ve entered another dimension. Looking at the stalactites and stalagmites glowing under colorful lights feels like walking through a giant sculpture park created by nature itself.

  • Pro-Tip! Some paths are slippery and the ceilings can be low, so comfortable sneakers are a must over pretty heels! You don’t want to fall while trying to get that perfect shot, right?

2. The Pond of Clarity: Bulyeongsa Temple

Tucked deep within the Geumgangsong pine forest, Bulyeongsa Temple is the definition of tranquility. Legend says the temple’s reflection in the pond looks like the shadow of Buddha (hence the name “Bulyeong,” meaning “Buddha’s Shadow”). As a temple for Buddhist nuns, the atmosphere is exceptionally neat and delicate. Walking through the pines that are hundreds of years old while listening to the wind, you’ll feel your daily stress melt away in an instant.

3. Floating Over the Sea! Jukbyeon Port & Heart Beach

If I had to pick the hottest spot in Uljin right now, it’s definitely the Jukbyeon Coast Skyrail! You can ride a cute monorail and soak in the breathtaking views of the East Coast. Specifically, the “Heart Beach”—so named because the coastline looks like a heart from above—is an essential photo zone.

  • Highly Recommended: Visit the “Into the Storm” drama set near Jukbyeon Lighthouse. The contrast between the orange roofs and the deep blue sea is perfect for photography!

Eating is Half the Trip! The “Tastes” You Must Try in Uljin

There’s a saying that it’s a “crime” to visit Uljin and not eat this: Uljin Snow Crab and Red Snow Crab (Hong-ge)!

If you head to Jukbyeon Port or Hupo Port, fresh crabs caught straight from the sea are waiting for you in tanks. Picking out the sweet, plump crab meat and finishing it off with crab shell fried rice mixed with savory innards… it’s truly a “taste of paradise” that needs no words.  Pair it with a bowl of refreshing Mulhoe (spicy raw fish soup), and you’ll know your trip was a success.

Finishing the Day Warmly: Baegam Hot Springs

How about a night at Baegam Hot Springs for your tired legs after a long day of walking and filming? Famous since the Silla Dynasty, these alkaline hot spring waters are renowned for making your skin silky smooth. Soaking in an outdoor bath during the chilly season is the ultimate healing experience, don’t you think?

Preparing Your Uljin Escape (Travel & Tips)

1. How do I get there?

  • Bus: It takes about 4 hours by bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam). Enjoying the scenery out the window makes the time fly by!

  • Car/Rental: This is the most recommended method! There is nothing quite like the feeling of driving along National Road No. 7 on the East Coast.

2. When is the best time to visit? Honestly, Uljin is beautiful all year round!  Spring for cherry blossoms,  Summer for swimming,  Autumn for the foliage at Bulyeongsa Valley, and  Winter for hot springs and seasonal crab! However, true travel experts aim for the cozy, quiet atmosphere of the autumn-winter season.

3. Travel Tips

  • Admission Fees: Major attractions like Seongnyu Cave have entry fees (around 5,000 KRW for adults). Cards are convenient, but having a little cash is helpful for small stalls.

  • Reservations: During weekends or crab festival seasons, accommodations are hard to find! Make sure to book in advance.

Nearby Adventures

Want more than just Uljin?

  • Head North to Samcheok, the city of caves!

  • Head South to Yeongdeok, famous for even more snow crab! I highly recommend planning an “East Coast Road Trip” linking these three spots.

Are you tired of the same old tourist traps? This vacation, head to Uljin, where blue seas, deep forests, and incredible food await. It will be a special time to discover the true hidden charms of Korea!
