Jeonju: Your Ultimate Guide to Korea’s Most Delicious & Historic Hotspot!
[Jeonju Travel] Turning Off the Monitor for Time Travel! An Authentic Review of Wansan-gu, Jeonju: Overflowing with Food and Romance
Hello, everyone! How’s your daily grind treating you these days? A few days ago, I felt like my soul was being completely crushed while staring into my dual monitors to churn out web design drafts and organizing the inventory for the new underwear arrivals at my shop. Standing all day helping customers and wrestling with my mouse at night made me think, “Ah, I’m seriously going to burn out at this rate!” So, I boldly closed my Photoshop window and impulsively booked a train ticket.
The destination? The place where Korea’s traditional beauty and hip vibes perfectly coexist: Wansan-gu, Jeollabuk-do, Jeonju! Visiting again for the first time in a long while since 2017, Jeonju has retained its vintage charm while becoming so much more refined and captivating. From the Jeonju Hanok Village that made my Instagram feed explode, to a food tour that aggressively stimulated my salivary glands, here is my vivid, firsthand account of walking, eating, and experiencing Jeonju. Let’s dive right in!
1. A Time Slip to the Past, Jeonju Hanok Village (feat. The Hanbok Shot of a Lifetime)
Getting off at Jeonju Station and taking a taxi to Wansan-gu, a magical scene unfolded before my eyes. Instead of a dense forest of buildings, there were over 700 tranquil, traditional Hanok houses huddled together. The moment I stepped onto the stone wall paths, my complicated mind completely cleared, and I felt my stress blowing away!
The absolute highlight here is the ‘Hanbok Experience.’ Normally, I just wear loose, comfortable clothes to work at the shop, but for this day, I changed into a bright, vivid Hanbok and perfectly channeled the spirit of a Joseon Dynasty noblewoman (?). There are so many rental shops that you just have to pick one that suits your taste. Taking pictures against the elegant curves of the Hanok roofs was a miracle—literally every shot was an A-cut! My occupational disease kicked in, and the colors and atmosphere were so artistic that I wanted to use them as traditional concept web design assets right away. In every alley, couples, families, and solo travelers were all roaming the streets in Hanbok, giving off an energetic vibe unique to Jeonju.
2. A Mysterious Harmony of East and West! Gyeonggijeon Shrine and Jeondong Catholic Cathedral
In the heart of the Hanok Village, you’ll find the absolute must-visit courses of Wansan-gu. First, I stopped by ‘Gyeonggijeon Shrine,’ which enshrines the portrait of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. Walking slowly through the bamboo forest path in the tranquil and magnificent atmosphere really calmed my mind. (For your information, Gyeonggijeon has a small admission fee of 3,000 KRW!)
And right when you turn around from the main gate of Gyeonggijeon, the overwhelmingly visual ‘Jeondong Catholic Cathedral’ appears! This Romanesque-Byzantine style building made of red bricks is truly grand and beautiful. The landscape of traditional Hanok with their rounded curves facing this sharp, exotic cathedral—this unbalanced yet perfect harmony is just too good for taking photos. If the weather is nice, don’t forget to hike up to Omokdae and Imokdae to look down at the panoramic view of the entire Hanok Village. Seeing the hundreds of tiled roofs spread out beneath your wide-open view will completely clear your chest.
3. UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Jeonju? Diet Starts Tomorrow!
Honestly, it’s no exaggeration to say I came to Jeonju for this. A full-blown Mukbang (food tour)! Jeonju is proudly designated as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. All of Wansan-gu is literally a paradise for gourmands.
The very first thing I tasted was Jeonju’s eternal pride, ‘Jeonju Bibimbap.’ Don’t imagine the kind of bibimbap you just casually mix with gochujang at home. I was first moved by the fresh local ingredients and the neat brass bowl plating, and then moved again by the nutty, savory flavors spreading in my mouth. And if you had a drink the night before, you absolutely must have a hot stone bowl of ‘Kongnamul Gukbap’ (Bean Sprout Soup with Rice) the next morning. The refreshing and spicy broth completely soothes your stomach, and it felt like it washed away all the fatigue in my legs from standing and working at the shop.
When night falls, the real party begins! If you go to the famous ‘Makgeolli Alley,’ you can witness the miracle of an unbelievable number of side dishes (anju) appearing—enough to break the table’s legs—every time you order a dented kettle of rice wine. It’s a genuine local vibe where you can quickly get loud and friendly even with strangers. Also, the ‘Nambu Market Night Market’ just outside the Hanok Village is the holy grail of street food. From plump meat dumplings (mandu) to sweet and spicy tteokbokki, fire-grilled seafood skewers, and the famous Jeonju Choco Pie for dessert! It’s a place where you endure happy torture as your mouth gets no time to rest.
4. Finding Hidden Gems Outside the Hanok Village: Jaman Mural Village & Cafe Tour
Once you’ve fully enjoyed the main streets of the Hanok Village, walk up the hill a little to head towards ‘Jaman Mural Village.’ Every alley is painted with colorful and sensational murals, making it so much fun to look around. It’s also a great spot to escape the crowds of the main street and score some peaceful photos of a lifetime. Looking at all those pretty colors really made my design inspiration bubble up.
When your legs start to ache a bit from walking, pop into one of the beautiful cafes hidden throughout Wansan-gu. The options are endless, from old-school teahouses selling traditional teas like Ssanghwa-tang to roastery cafes with modern, aesthetic interiors. Sipping a cool cup of coffee while checking out traditional craft one-day classes, like making Hanji (traditional Korean paper) or folding fans, is a small joy you can only experience in Jeonju.
5. Editor’s Pick! Practical Jeonju Travel Tips & How to Get There
Now, for all of you whose bodies are itching to leave for Jeonju right this second, here’s a clean summary of practical tips!
-
How to Get to Jeonju (Transportation): If you take the KTX from Yongsan Station in Seoul, you’re there in 1 hour and 40 minutes! Taking an express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. It’s perfect accessibility for travelers without a car. Once you arrive at Jeonju Station or the terminal, it’s just a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the Hanok Village (Wansan-gu).
-
Parking Tips: The public parking lots around the Hanok Village on weekends are literally hell gates (!). It’s highly recommended to use public transportation if possible, and if you brought a rental car, I strongly suggest parking on the outskirts and taking a bus or taxi in. Exploring the inside of the village on foot without a car is the best way anyway.
-
When to Go?: Spring (April-May) when cherry blossoms are fluttering, or Autumn (October-November) when autumn leaves peak are the absolute best! The weather is perfect for walking, too. The true winner is the one who uses their annual leave to visit on a weekday instead of a crowded weekend!
-
Comfortable Shoes are a Must: The ground in the Hanok Village is paved with stones, and you’ll have to walk up hills like the mural village or Omokdae, so cushy sneakers are a must over pretty heels.
-
Accommodation Recommendation: Since you made the trip to Jeonju, I recommend spending the night in a traditional Hanok guesthouse rather than a regular hotel. The romance of lying on a warm Ondol (heated) floor and looking up at the night sky will be an unforgettable memory.
-
If you have extra time? It’s really great to bundle your trip with Maisan Provincial Park (Tapsa Temple) in Jinan, which is an hour’s drive from Jeonju, or Juknokwon (Bamboo Forest) in Damyang, where you can breathe in the fresh air.
Phew, writing this brings back all the peaceful and delicious memories from that day, and makes me want to bounce right out of my seat and travel again. Jeonju, where tranquil history, hip culture, and a never-failing feast of gastronomy perfectly blend together! If you are considering a domestic trip this summer or the upcoming autumn, Wansan-gu, Jeonju, should definitely be at the top of your list.
I guess there’s nothing quite like traveling to shake off all your stress. Now, with the energy I fully recharged in Jeonju, I’ll return to reality to list up the new underwear arrivals and design the main banner for the website! Eat lots of delicious food and have a happy trip to Jeonju, everyone!
