Suncheon: Where Nature, History, and Tranquility Meet in South Korea’s Jeollanam-do

Are you ready to fall in love with the jewel of Jeollanam-do? If you’re looking to escape the crowded streets of Seoul or Busan and soak in the authentic breath of Korea and lush green healing, Suncheon is the place for you. Let’s dive into an exciting travelogue of Suncheon, the officially designated “Ecological Capital of Korea!”

Why Suncheon? Why Now?

I still can’t forget the crisp, refreshing air the moment I first stepped foot in Suncheon. It’s not just “pretty scenery”—the entire city feels like one massive, living garden. From the world-renowned Suncheon Bay Wetlands to the Naganeupseong Folk Village, where it feels like you’ve time-traveled back to the Joseon Dynasty, Suncheon is a city where the past, present, and nature coexist in perfect harmony. If you’re a traveler in need of a “comma” in your busy life, Suncheon isn’t just an option—it’s a must!

Magic Across Time: Into Suncheon’s History

The charm of Suncheon goes beyond just looking at landscapes; there are places holding hundreds of years of history waiting for us.

1. Naganeupseong Folk Village

Wow, this place is incredible! Usually, when people think of a “folk village,” they imagine a museum-like display, but Naganeupseong is a “living museum” where residents actually live to this day. Walking along the fortress walls and looking down at the cluster of thatched-roof houses feels like a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

  • Pro Tip: Be sure to walk up the fortress stairs and take a photo with the entire village in the background. It’s a guaranteed “photo of a lifetime!” There are also hanbok rental services, so wearing traditional dress while wandering the alleys will make you feel like royalty from the Joseon era.

2. Seonamsa & Songgwangsa Temples

Suncheon is home to two of Korea’s most beautiful Buddhist temples. First, Seonamsa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features the stunning rainbow-shaped “Seungseon-gyo” bridge. In spring, the double cherry blossoms and plum blossoms bloom in abundance, making your heart flutter.

If you seek a deeper serenity, I recommend Songgwangsa Temple. As one of the three “Jewel Temples” of Korea, its scale is immense. Just walking along the forest paths will make the clutter in your mind disappear like magic.

The Lungs of the Earth: World-Class Suncheon Bay

Now for the highlight you can’t miss! The Suncheon Bay National Garden and Wetland.

Suncheon Bay National Garden

You could easily spend an entire day here. It’s filled with themed gardens that look like they were plucked straight from countries around the world. From the Dutch windmill garden and the geometric French garden to the traditional Korean garden showcasing classic beauty—it’s all here!

  • Must-Do: Take the “SkyCube,” an automated monorail that connects the garden to the wetlands. It’s a fun ride with gorgeous views out the window.

Suncheon Bay Wetland (A Feast of Reeds)

The climax of any Suncheon trip! The Suncheon Bay Wetland is an ecological marvel. Walking along the wooden decks amidst endless fields of golden reeds, you’ll be overwhelmed by the majesty of nature.

  • The Highlight: Even if it’s a bit of a hike, you must go up to the Yongsan Observatory. The view of the S-shaped waterway winding through the reeds is beyond words. I hope you get to experience that magical moment when the whole world turns orange at sunset.

Surrender to the Flavors of Jeolla-do!

No trip is complete without food! Being in Jeollanam-do—the culinary capital of Korea—the food in Suncheon is a work of art.

  1. Cockle Set Meal (Ggomak Jeongshik): Since it’s close to Beolgyo, the fresh cockles are top-tier. Your happiness will skyrocket when you see a table overflowing with seasoned cockles, steamed cockles, and cockle pancakes.

  2. Mudskipper Soup (Jjangttungeo-tang): It might sound unfamiliar, but it’s a local health specialty. It’s much richer and nuttier than typical fish soups; you’ll finish a bowl of rice in no time.

  3. Utjang Market Gukbap: If you head to the Gukbap alley in Utjang Market, you’ll experience incredible local generosity—ordering just two bowls of soup often gets you a free plate of boiled pork (suyuk)!

 Practical Tips for Travelers!
  • How to Get There: Take the KTX from Seoul’s Yongsan Station; it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Suncheon Station. It’s closer than you think!

  • Getting Around: Make good use of the “Suncheon City Tour Bus.” It connects all the major attractions and is the best choice for backpackers.

  • When to Visit: It’s great all year, but I highly recommend Spring (April-May) for the flowers and Autumn (October-November) for the golden reeds.

  • Integrated Tickets: They sell integrated passes for the National Garden and Wetlands at a discount, so check the ticket booth!

Suncheon is a city that suits the warm sunlight better than flashy neon lights, and the sound of wind in the reeds better than noisy car horns. When you need to catch your breath in a busy world, or when you want to make unforgettable memories with loved ones, there is no place more perfect than Suncheon.

Why not treat yourself to a trip into the magical scenery of Suncheon this weekend? You definitely won’t regret it!
