Wangsan-myeon: Discover Gangneung’s Hidden Mountain Gem in Korea’s Pristine East

Hello, fellow adventurers! Your favorite explorer is back with a truly hidden gem!

Are you tired of the same old Gangneung trips? If you’re looking for a spot that makes you gasp, “Wait, is this really Korea?” then you’ve come to the right place. I’ve personally scouted a breathtaking destination that most tourists overlook.

Today, I’m taking you to Wangsan-myeon, Gangneung, a place so high up that even the clouds stop to rest! I’ll be sharing my first-hand experience of the crisp mountain air and the stunning vistas of Anbandegi Village. This guide is packed with SEO-friendly tips and vivid details to get your travel cells tingling. Let’s dive in! 🚀

Anbandegi Village

“There’s a Place Like This in Gangneung?” The Emerald Allure of Wangsan-myeon

When you think of “Gangneung,” the cool East Sea usually comes to mind first, right? But the true hidden charm of Gangneung lies a bit further inland and much higher up—in Wangsan-myeon.

Wangsan-myeon is a village that breathes the pure energy of the Taebaek Mountains. The moment I opened my car door, that sharp, refreshing mountain air hit my lungs! The city’s fine dust and noise felt like a distant memory. Because of its high altitude, it’s cool enough to live without an air conditioner in the summer, and in the autumn, the entire mountain transforms into a fiery sea of crimson leaves.

The Crown Jewel: Anbandegi Village

The “main dish” of this trip is undoubtedly Anbandegi. Do you know what “Anban” means? It refers to the thick wooden board used for pounding rice cakes. The village was named this because the terrain is wide and concave, just like that board.

At 1,100 meters above sea level, you truly feel like you’re walking on clouds! The endless cabbage fields and the giant wind turbines spinning majestically make you feel like you’ve been transported to the Swiss Alps. When I visited, a light mist was rolling in, creating an ethereal, dreamy atmosphere that words can hardly describe. (I may or may not have taken hundreds of photos… 📸)

Road Trip to Wangsan-myeon: How to Get There & Pro Tips

Ready to pack your bags? I highly recommend a rental car for Wangsan-myeon. The winding mountain roads offer views that are literal works of art.

  1. From Seoul: Hop on the KTX to Gangneung Station! (Takes about 1 hour 40 mins).
  2. Pick up a Rental: Rent a car near the station and drive about 40 minutes up the mountain to reach Wangsan-myeon.
  3. Driving Caution: The roads are quite curvy and the altitude is high, so drive carefully! But trust me, the reward at the top is worth every turn.

💡 Travel Expert Tip:

If you plan on catching the sunrise or stargazing at Anbandegi, a car is absolutely essential. At night, the sky turns into a pitch-black canvas filled with a breathtaking explosion of stars!

Taste the Mountains: Local Eats in Wangsan-myeon

Exploring is hard work! Here are the must-eat dishes to fuel your adventure.

  • Sanchae Bibimbap: A bowl of rice mixed with wild greens (bracken, aster, gondre) foraged right from the mountains. The aroma of the perilla oil is out of this world!
  • Gamja Ongsimi: Gangwon-do is famous for potatoes! This chewy potato dough soup is incredibly comforting and savory.
  • Chodang Sundubu: On your way back down to Gangneung city, don’t forget to stop for a bowl of soft, silky tofu made with seawater.

The Four Seasons of Wangsan-myeon

  • Spring (April–May): Perfect for right now! Witness the birth of pale green buds and wild mountain cherry blossoms.
  • Summer (July–August): Escape the city heat and enjoy the mountain breeze. This is when the cabbage fields are at their peak green.
  • Autumn (October–November): A foliage party! Just driving through the area is healing for the soul.
  • Winter (December–February): Anbandegi covered in snow looks like a real-life Frozen. (Crampons are a must for your shoes!)

Essential Checklist Before You Go!

  1. Light Jacket: It’s a mountain, so the temperature drops quickly. Even in summer, bring a windbreaker!
  2. Sneakers: You’ll be walking on dirt paths, so leave the heels behind and bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes.
  3. Camera & Extra Battery: Every turn is a masterpiece—your battery will drain fast!
  4. Trash Bag: Let’s keep nature beautiful. Be a true traveler and leave no trace!

Closing: Nature’s Best Comfort

The stress of daily life in the concrete jungle felt so small when standing before the vast horizons of Wangsan-myeon. Why not put your worries aside this weekend and head to the clouds in Gangneung? The sky-high trails are waiting for you.
