Jangho Port: The Naples of Korea! A Healing Adventure into Emerald Waters

Hey there, fellow travelers! Are you looking for a hidden gem in Korea that will make you go “Wow!” at first sight? If you’re tired of the usual crowded spots, let me introduce you to the crown jewel of Geundeok-myeon, Samcheok: Jangho Port

I first experienced this place on a brilliant spring day in April 2021, and I completely fell in love. People call it the “Naples of Korea,” and let me tell you—it’s not an exaggeration! The combination of crystal-clear emerald waters and majestic rock formations is simply out of this world. Ready to dive into the magic? Let’s go!

First Impressions: “Is This Even Real?” A Jewel-Like Sea

The moment you arrive at Jangho Port, one thought will cross your mind: “The water is incredibly transparent!”  While the East Sea is usually known for its deep, dark blues, Jangho Port boasts a stunning emerald and turquoise hue in its shallower areas. It’s so clear that you can see every grain of sand and rock on the ocean floor.

The jagged rock formations surrounding the port act as a natural breakwater, keeping the waves gentle and calm. It feels like swimming in a massive, natural outdoor pool! When the April sunlight hits the surface, the water sparkles like diamonds—you won’t be able to stop snapping photos!

Top 2 Must-Do “Fun” Activities at Jangho Port!

Jangho Port isn’t just for looking; it’s a place for action!

1. Transparent Kayaking  This is the signature experience here! Paddle out in a kayak with a completely clear bottom and feel like you’re floating on air. Seeing the fish swim right beneath your feet is a surreal experience. The cool breeze in April makes it the perfect time to paddle without getting too hot. It’s romantic for couples and a total blast for friends!

  • Price: Roughly 10,000 to 20,000 KRW per person (varies by season/shop).

  • Pro Tip: Go around 1 PM or 2 PM when the sun is highest—that’s when the underwater visibility is at its absolute best!

2. Snorkeling  “Can you really snorkel in Korea?” Yes, and Jangho Port is the place to do it! The water is so pristine that you can greet the fish just by dipping your head in with a mask. You can rent all the gear right on-site, so you don’t need to bring a thing. (Just a heads-up: the water can be a bit chilly in April, so check the temperature before you jump in!)

A View from the Clouds: Samcheok Marine Cable Car

If you want a panoramic perspective, the Samcheok Marine Cable Car is a must! It glides over the ocean from Jangho Station to Yonghwa Station. Looking down at the coastline from high above is pure artistry.

From this height, you can see the unique geography of Jangho Port—the way the land curves to embrace the sea. Part of the cable car floor is made of tempered glass, giving you a thrilling “walking on air” sensation!

Taste the Ocean: Must-Eat Local Delights

No trip is complete without food! The area around the port is packed with restaurants serving the freshest catches.

  • Natural Sashimi (Hoe) : Try sliced raw fish caught right at the port. The chewy, fresh texture is on a whole different level compared to what you find in the city!

  • Haemultang & Gomchi-guk : Samcheok is famous for Gomchi-guk (Moray Eel Soup). The refreshing, spicy broth is the perfect way to wash away any travel fatigue.

  • Mulhoe : Sliced raw fish served in a sweet, sour, and spicy cold broth. It’s the ultimate appetite booster!

Practical Travel Tips for Your Adventure
  1. When to Visit: April and May are gorgeous with spring blooms, but if you want the full water-play experience, July and August are best. Just be prepared for crowds during the peak summer season!

  2. Getting There:

    • By Car: It’s about a 3.5-hour drive from Seoul. The coastal drive along the Donghae Expressway is breathtaking!

    • By Public Transport: Take the KTX to Donghae Station, then grab a taxi or local bus. It’s convenient and saves you the stress of driving.

  3. Parking: There’s a public lot at Jangho Port, but it fills up fast. Getting there early is key!

  4. Essentials: Bring a towel, a change of clothes, and most importantly—stylish sunglasses and a hat for those iconic Instagram shots!

 Bonus Stops Nearby!
  • Haesindang Park: Only 5 minutes away by car! It’s a quirky park famous for its unique (and a bit “blush-worthy”) sculptures based on a local legend. The coastal views here are also top-tier.

  • Samcheok Ocean Railbike: Start at Yonghwa Station and pedal your way through pine forests and glowing tunnels right next to the crashing waves.

Jangho Port in Samcheok is more than just a destination; it’s a “healing gift set” that recharges your soul. The memories of that warm April air and the emerald sea are still some of my favorites.

If you want to experience the true essence of the East Sea and fill your feed with stunning ocean views, don’t hesitate! Make Jangho Port your next weekend getaway. I hope your journey is as clear and sparkling as the waters of Samcheok!
