As soon as you step into Boryeong, the heat of the festival is no joke! The area around the Boryeong Mud Theme Park and Daecheon Beach is already packed with “Mud Humans” dyed in shades of grey. Even people who are usually neat freaks were coating themselves in mud as if competing to see who could get the messiest.
The sound of exciting EDM music blasting from the entrance already had my shoulders grooving! The moment I strapped the ticket around my wrist and entered the Mud Plaza, I thought to myself, “Yes! This is what real summer is all about!”
🎢 “Ever Rolled in a Pit of Mud?” Conquering the Mud Experience Zones
The experience zone was truly a giant “Mud Playground!” Let me introduce you to a few of the most fun courses I experienced firsthand.
1. Mud Slide
This is on a whole different level from regular water park slides! Instead of water, it’s coated in slippery mud, so the speed is incredible. The thrill of sliding down—whoosh!—and splashing into the mud pool at the end is pure gold! So what if a little mud gets in your mouth or nose? That’s the true flavor of the Mud Festival!
2. Mud Mob-scene
Inside a massive mud vat, you dance to the music while mud cannons blast from the sky! Jumping around with arms around strangers makes everyone best friends regardless of nationality or age. A foreign friend next to me kept shouting “It’s crazy!” while giving non-stop thumbs up.
3. Mud Tag & Wrestling
A fierce competition held inside the mud pits! Because you’re on mud where your feet sink deep, your body doesn’t move quite like you want it to, leading to constant tumbles on your backside. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt! It’s great if you win, and if you lose, you just get another mud shower, so it’s a win-win!
🎨 “Mud is Fashion!” Mud Painting & Self-Coating
It’s boring to just paint yourself grey, right? On one side, there’s a spot where they apply Color Mud for face painting. I drew cat whiskers on my friend’s face, and I gave myself a cool mud “tattoo” on my arm.
And then, the grand finale: Self-Mud Coating! If you grab a handful of mud from the self-service tub and rub it all over, your skin feels incredibly smooth. They say Boryeong mud is rich in minerals and great for the skin, right? I rubbed it on to my heart’s content, shouting, “Today, I’m a woman/man getting a luxury mud treatment!”
🎆 “It Gets Hotter at Night!” Mud Night Party
If you fought with mud during the day, it’s time to fight with passion at night! The K-POP performances and beach parties held against the backdrop of the cool night sea at Daecheon Beach are truly the highlight. With brilliant fireworks lighting up the sky and a cold beer in hand, dancing on the sand makes all the stress of daily life fly away to another galaxy.

Outfit Choice: A T-shirt and shorts you can throw away are the best! Mud can be hard to wash out, so pull out your oldest clothes. I also recommend layering a light tee over your swimwear!

Waterproof Case is a Must: You have to take photos! A waterproof smartphone case is a literal lifesaver. You don’t want to touch your phone with mud-covered hands.

Strategic Showering: Shower rooms get extremely crowded right when the experiences end. My tip is to leave a little early or use them very late at night. (Portable showers often charge a fee, so bring small change or a card!)

Skin Protection: Mud is great, but the sun is strong. Apply a thick layer of waterproof sunscreen before you cover yourself in mud!

Boryeong Food Tour: There are tons of fresh sashimi and Grilled Clam restaurants near the festival grounds. Don’t forget to fill your mud-starved stomach with sizzling grilled clams!
