“Wow! Is this the heart of Gumi?” Stepping into Geumosan

⛰️ “Wow! Is this the heart of Gumi?” Stepping into Geumosan

Can you believe this accessibility? It’s less than a 10-minute drive from Gumi Station! Geumosan is a magical place where the air changes the moment you enter the entrance, despite being so close to the city center. Seeing the vast expanse of Geumoji Reservoir at the start of the trail already got my energy levels soaring!

The ‘Geumoji Olleh Trail’ surrounding the reservoir is almost flat, making it the perfect place to warm up before the real hike. Walking along the deck that feels like you’re floating on water, you instantly understand why this is a favorite healing spot for Gumi locals.

🧗‍♀️ “The Real Hike Begins! From Chaemijeong to Daehye Falls”

As you enter the main hiking trail, the first place you’ll encounter is Chaemijeong Pavilion. The sight of the serene Hanok buildings harmonizing with the cherry blossom trees was so elegant. I made sure to snap a proof-shot here before heading up!

The Geumosan trail starts with quite a few stairs, but the paths are so well-maintained that I could climb up with a cheerful “Heave-ho!” Just as I started to feel slightly out of breath, I heard the refreshing sound of rushing water—the Daehye Falls (Myeonggeum Falls).

  • The Majesty of Daehye Falls: The stream of water falling from a height of $27m$ is a true masterpiece! Standing beneath the falls felt like being in front of a natural air conditioner. The mist-like water droplets seemed to wash away all the sweat from the climb. Make sure to pause here for a quick hydration break!

🧗‍♂️ “The Real Challenge? Doseongul Cave and Halttak Hill”

Right next to the waterfall is Doseongul Cave, perched on a sheer cliff. The path is a bit steep, but you absolutely must go for the view of Gumi city from inside the cave. It’s so breathtaking that you might actually start wondering, “Am I a mountain spirit now?”

Then comes the infamous Halttak Hill! The name literally translates to “Panting Hill” because it’s said to make you pant for breath, and yes, the “stairway to heaven” does unfold here. But don’t worry! The view of Geumoji Reservoir from the observatories along the way is unrealistically beautiful, making you cheer yourself on for “Just one more step!”

🚩 “Conquered! The Peak of Hyeonwolbong and the Mystery of Yaksaam”

After passing Halttak Hill, a relatively gentle ridge trail follows. Finally, I reached the summit, Hyeonwolbong! I took a proud photo in front of the summit stone to say, “I made it to Geumosan!”

However, I believe the true protagonist of Geumosan isn’t the summit itself, but Yaksaam Hermitage located just below. The sight of the temple precariously nestled under the craggy cliffs is simply jaw-dropping.

  • The Beomjonggak View: The view of the Bell Pavilion across the narrow suspension bridge, framed by a sea of clouds, leaves you speechless. Finding peace of mind there made me feel grateful to my leg muscles for working so hard to get me up there.

🥘 “The Real Highlight… Seafood Pancakes and Makgeolli?!”

You absolutely cannot skip this essential course after heading down: the food town at the entrance of Geumosan!

  • Seafood Pancakes and Sujebi: There is nothing in the world to envy when you have a thick, golden-brown seafood pancake and a glass of local Gumi Makgeolli (rice wine).

  • Pro Tip: Even on weekdays, it gets packed during lunch hours, so have the sense to time your descent accordingly! Ending the day with a hot bowl of Perilla Seed Sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup) will have you saying, “Today was perfect!”

💡 Tips to Enjoy Geumosan 200%!

  1. Footwear: While the paths are well-paved, there are many stone steps. Be sure to wear hiking boots or trekking shoes with good grip.

  2. Restrooms: The restroom at the entrance of Daehye Falls is the last one. There aren’t any further up, so stop by in advance!

  3. Photo Zones: A ‘silhouette shot’ taken from inside Doseongul Cave looking out is a must. You’ll get the photo of a lifetime.

  4. Parking: The parking lot fills up quickly on weekends. I highly recommend arriving early in the morning or using public transportation!

🌸 Final Thoughts: A Mountain You’ll Crave in Every Season

Cherry blossoms in spring, refreshing waterfalls in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and white snow flowers in winter! Geumosan is a clever mountain that shows a different charm every time you visit. While it’s not the easiest hike physically, it rewards you with scenery that makes every bit of effort worth it.

If this review has you itching to go, why not head out to Geumosan in Gumi this weekend? I’m rooting for your joyful hike!
